You already know how to ensure that the new year brings you love and luck: kissing at midnight; drinking champagne; eating greens and black eyed peas.
But couldn’t we all use an extra dose of good things in 2017? Here are 7 other new year’s traditions you may not know.
And the investigative website Snopes.com reports that these superstitions all are true.

* To usher the old year out at midnight, fling open all the doors of your house so 2016 can leave easily.
* Make as much noise as you can at midnight — shoot fireworks, toot horns, cheer — to scare away any evil spirits of 2016 that may be lurking around.
* Wear something new on the first day of the year to increase the chance that you will have more new things in the coming year.
* Try not to break anything on Jan. 1 and don’t cry, or 2017 will be filled with sadness and loss.
* The cupboards must not be bare on New Year’s Day, so go to the grocery store and stock up on food.
* Nothing should leave the home on the first day of the year — not even garbage. Something must be brought into your home before you take something out.
* Do not do laundry on New Year’s Day, to keep your family members safe from being “washed away” (dying). Some folks don’t wash the dishes for the same reason.

And if you want to ensure that you stay warm in 2017, call Sam Pollard & Sons at 252-752-3661 to arrange for a preventative maintenance agreement for your heating unit.

Hope you have a lucky, happy and warm new year!
