What to do if your toilet overflows

By on April 6, 2017

1. Open the toilet tank and push the flapper down to stop any more water from entering the tank. (Or locate the water shut-off valve just behind the toilet base and turn the handle on the valve clockwise until the water shuts off.)

2. Wipe up the water from the floor using towels or a Shop-Vac. Do this now so you don’t slip. (Later, be sure to disinfect everything dampened by the toilet water.)

3. Use a toilet plunger to remove any foreign objects blocking the pipe and preventing the toilet from flushing.

4. If plunging does not remove the clog, it may be located further along the pipe. Call Sam Pollard & Son at 252-752-3661 to diagnose and fix the issue.

5. Once the clog has been removed, reset the flapper in the toilet tank or open the water shut-off valve, so water will flow into the toilet bowl again.
